XR guide: getting started
this channel covers the step-by-step process for getting the best quality experience from your smartphone and XR strap.
1. initial setup
play the wink: start by opening/playing/streaming your desired wink (SBS video or photo) on your smartphone.
go fullscreen: rotate your device to landscape mode to maximize the display size.
load the XR: carefully slide your phone into the XR strap.
2. winking at pixels
The most crucial part of setup is ensuring the two frames are perfectly centered in the XR's lenses.
this is where the name pixelwink was born!
to achieve the best alignment:
close one eye (either one).
look toward the center of your xr, focusing on the vertical plastic piece that divides the two viewing sides.
adjust the phone (sliding it left or right) until the edge of the single frame (the pixels on your screen) lines up exactly with the plastic divider.
the other frame should no longer be visible to your open eye.
alternate method: many XR straps have a small arrow indicator molded into the top hardware. you can use this arrow to line up with the on-screen division line, though this method is often less precise than the "winking at pixels" technique.
3. adjusting your lenses
everyone's eyes are unique, which is why most xr straps have adjustable lenses. taking a moment to find your "preset" will ensure a clear, immersive image.
look for two types of adjustment knobs on your xr:
IPD (interpupillary distance)
moves the lenses closer together or farther apart to match the distance between the centers of your eyes.
adjust this until the two images seamlessly merge into a single, comfortable view.
focus distance (diopter)
adjusts the distance between your eyes and the lenses to correct for near/farsightedness.
adjust this until the image is perfectly sharp and crisp.
if you do everything correctly, the image should be very clear and immersive. you may even be able to see the individual pixels of your phone's screen, as no human-eye-resolution smart phones exist.
as far as we know. wink.
4. troubleshooting common issues
blurry image
blurriness can usually be fixed by:
readjusting the lenses (ipd and focus distance).
clearing lens fog (see below).
adjusting the content size or ipd setting within the media player, if available.
If blurriness persists, it may be caused by physical eyesight constraints or external viewing factors.
double imaging
also known as a *cross-eyed* effect, this occurs when your eyes are unable to comfortably focus on a singular, merged image. this is usually caused by the SBS content being too large on the screen, meaning the distance between the on-screen frames is too wide for your eyes to merge.
lens fog
It's common for xr lenses to fog up, especially when you first start using the device. fog is caused by condensation forming due to temperature differences between your face and the lenses themselves.
if fog is a persistent issue, anti-fog sprays (mostly used for glasses) work like a charm. we have linked a few recommended products in the #links channel.
