welcome to pixelwink!
pixelwink is a new stereo social project dedicated to reimagining how we experience virtual content, perceive the real world, and make immersive experiences more accessible. we are building a community around a new kind of visual medium - one that is powerful, affordable, and puts the creator in complete control.
what is stereo?
the core of pixelwink is the concept of stereo content. In this project, "stereo" refers to any SBS (side-by-side) video or photo. this format displays two images next to each other, which your viewing device then merges into a single, immersive field of view.
stereo content can be:
monoscopic: the same image is displayed to both eyes. this gives you a clear, cinematic, 2D experience.
stereoscopic: slightly different images are displayed to each eye, creating the illusion of 3D depth.
since this is a fairly new and exciting medium, we've decided to call these stereo immersibles *winks*. a wink is simply any SBS video or picture, 3D or not.
how is pixelwink different from VR?
unlike traditional virtual reality (VR), you don't look around in a wink. this may seem like a limitation, but it is pixelwink's core strength: creators have complete and total control over the visual experience. the wink *is* the experience, and there is no wasted field of view.
dive into passthru
another key feature of this medium is passthru. this is when your smartphone's camera feed is displayed in two identical SBS frames, essentially allowing you to look at the real world through your phone's camera with both eyes. it gives your daily life a cinematic, "*living movie*" feel.
there are a few niche smartphone applications that do this now for both iOS and android. you can find links to these existing apps in the <#1424465486128873502> channel. However, the pixelwink team is actively working on a new app that will incorporate passthru, wink viewing, and all future features in one seamless experience very soon!
what gear do I need?
the hardware required to enjoy winks is significantly more affordable than even the cheapest full VR headsets. all you need is your smartphone and an adapter.
we call this adapter an XR or a strap. We have linked the one we recommend (by VRShinecon) on the links page. this simple device is a one-size-fits-all adapter for any smartphone and provides the lenses and housing needed for an immersive experience - including passthru capability.
our mission
the pixelwink project aims to bring immersive virtual experiences to everyone, leveraging the screen you already carry in your pocket.
